standard 4 essays, kinda a lot of homework, especially for a 3 credit class. 20%,25%40%,15% for the essays in order. I would never recommend, way too harsh grader.

Austin Mantele · 2025 · 2025

Standard UW course load: four essays throughout the semester, with the last one being an op-ed. There are other assignments, but they are not graded and really don't take any time at all (almost all of them are just submitting various drafts of your essay throughout the process)

Erag Ramizi · 2025 · 2025

writing before every class but fair. have some readings and you have to write stuffs

Allison Fowler · 2025 · 2025

the pace of the class for the first two essays was really quick (the reading can be a bit overwhelming) but it got better/more manageable! the grading also got better throughout the year

Aled Roberts · 2025 · 2025

There is usually an assignment for every class (different exercises that help you in your process of writing your papers), and while they are useful, they are technically optional, so if you are pressed for time one week you can skip it. Four essays. The week before the essay you can easily spend 8-12 hours on it (depending on the essay), but that is the same for all UW classes. He is a very fair grader, and gives very helpful feedback, so in my opinion it is not too hard to get an "A" in the class. As long as you apply his feedback and lessons to your writing, you should be fine.

Wally Suphap · 2025 · 2025

Reasonable but inflexible deadlines. Expect ~400 words every class for assignments. If you don't do them, you're marked off on your essay. But I think it's worth it because it directly contributes to your essay, and it's the same as writing the actual essay atp

Celine Aenlle-Rocha · 2025 · 2025

Like I said, University Writing pretty much gives the same amount of homework in all sections because the curriculum is standardized so all students learn to write a literature analysis, research essay, etc... I didn't find the homework to be that taxing, though: all of the hw is put into a singular Google doc and she doesn't even check that we did it until the end of each essay-writing period, so you can always catch up on what you missed. Grading in any UW class can be tough, but it's meant to show your improvement- I ended with an A.

Jessica Campbell · 2025 · 2025

4 Essays, Workload similar to every UW class

Stephanie Ahrens · 2026 · 2026

Grade is determined entirely on four essays. The professor openly acknowledged that students are not meant to succeed on the first two, effectively locking in grade penalties before students have had the opportunity to adjust or improve. Although essays three and four constitute the majority of the work, strong performance there does little to offset early setbacks. The accompanying pre draft assignments were largely unhelpful and enforced with rigid, high school style rules around printing.

Alexander Burchfield · 2026 · 2026

Standard UW class, very informed and knows what he's talking about. However, he is a very very strict grader
