I learned a great deal about the prison system in not only the Arab World but also its Western counterparts. Due to this class, I was exposed to some of the best novels that I have ever read.

I learned how to examine literature in depth and critically, and apply literature to social and political movements

I learned a lot about the establishment of political prisons and how the experiences of the prisoners affect them spiritually, particularly through Sufism.

I learned about the plight and unique perspective and experience of political prisoners in the Arab world.

I enjoyed the course, but avoid taking it if you are easily triggered because the themes throughout the course were harsh

The material presented in this course is complex, difficult, challenging, and invaluable. I learned a lot about prison systems in the middle east and beyond as well as a lot about prison narratives and the themes that underscore each one. Also learned how to facilitate productive discussion and to write scholarly research papers.

I've read a lot of Arabic prison literature now, and have learned a lot about peoples' experiences during and after their time in imprisonment.

I learned a lot of the institution and functions of prison as a reform system but also as a role of torture and political control.
