Anime Effect: Japanese Media · Anthropology
I learned about how historical events and social phenomena influenced contemporary media in Japan, such as the post-war period and its impact on film thematics to unique events that constructed the otaku identity (e.g. Tsutomu Miyazaki). I also learned a lot about the art of anime (how it is designed/created/produced)!
A critical lens of the anime phenomenon and its deeply interconnected relationship with Japan and its people as a whole.
This was the first time I took an anthropology class, so I guess I learned in general how to see history and culture and society through a thing that I am so familiar with.
I learned quite a lot about the history behind Japan's animation, as well as the context of anime from different decades. I will 100% apply many of the concepts we learned and discussed in class to when I watch other anime or Japanese media in general.
If you are a fan of the medium or wish to know more, this seminar is excellent and offers a rigorous look at its history and recent popularity.

I learned the history and development of Japanese media culture and its relation with the American media development. I also learned to appreciate the animation techniques used in producing anime such as limited animation.
The technical, historical, and cultural sides of Anime in Japan. I learned how to analyze anime and discuss it in a technical manner. We learned about the development of the film genre over time, and the major works which represent the genre.
Foundational theories and concepts relevant to the serious study of anime, ranging from historical background to media and anthropological theory.
I learned incredibly valuable and still relevant information related to Japanese history (specifically post-WWII) and how that relates to Japanese media in very large ways, but also, important thematic and artistic features of Japanese anime (and other media). We read very interesting theoretical texts relating to the class content, instructing me on anthropological ways of thinking about content that I love deeply.
