This course explored the ethical issues that arise in all areas of a museum's operations from governance and management to collections acquisition, conservation, and deaccessioning. This course also examined the issues that arise when the ownership of objects in a museum's are questioned and the ethical considerations involved in retention, restitution and repatriation.
New ways of looking into the legal and ethical aspects of museums
This course gave me a good understanding of what constitutes "museum ethics" and the key debates that are currently taking place among scholars and professionals in the field. Much of the course focused on the ethical issues surrounding repatriation, and the student presentations throughout the semester helped us to address the questions in more concrete terms.
I learned about a variety of ethical issues that occur in museums, and discussed ways of addressing them. Led by one or two discussion leaders, we applied theoretical concepts to practical situations using a few questions as a framework for the conversation. Each person also had to present an ethical dilemma, which made up the basis for term paper.

I learned a lot about the complexities of ethical issues and learned a lot of practical information that I hope to take into my work after I graduate from this program.
I would definitely recommend if someone is interested in museum studies. If not, it might be too specific to be applicable.
I learned a lot about ethical problems in contemporary museums, dilemmas in the care and maintenance of museum collections, and cases of repatriation and restitution. My knowledge about how museums confront potential issues with donors and museum staff shed light on the structure of contemporary museums. I also learned about the complex role of the viewer and how this varies in different countries and contexts, especially for indigenous visitors coming to museums and viewing their ancestors behind a display case.
