A broad understanding of the major tendencies that shaped the discipline of anthropology from a critical perspective
It was a great overview of a variety of anthropological perspectives, styles, and core concepts, especially for someone who did not have a prior anthropology degree, I felt I could follow, the readings were interesting, the workload was manageable, and class discussions engaging. My biggest takeaways are mainly focused on how I as an anthropologist need to be alert, open minded, and highly conscious of my perspectives and biases. There is also great variety in existing writing and it gives me an idea of where I can go with my own work. Overall it's great for establishing what has been done, and what is possible.
History of Anthropology and theoretical and methodological development in the discipline. Also different important subjects in Anthropology such as representation of violence and reproduction of nation state.
Our studies primarily focused on social and cultural anthropologists throughout history. Through lectures and the readings, students are exposed to a wide variety of writing styles, descriptions, and analyses; gaining a multitude of perspectives and incorporating these authors' works into their writings.
This course was a great introduction to sociocultural anthropology as a whole. As someone without an background in anthropology, it served as my way in to the field by introducing me to the concept of ethnography, to important anthropological concepts, and to key questions for the discipline. It was particularly interesting to see how the discipline has progressed from its earliest days to the present, as well as the role that colonialism has played in this process.
An introduction of principles and applications of social and cultural anthropology.
Considering that most of the Professors in Columbia are highly involved, engaged and seek to make it the best learning experience from Columbia, I would not recommend taking this course as the lack of organization and structure really affectss the learning experience
The class is required for MA Sociocultural Anthropology students, so it is tailored for the major students and not necessarily for others.
As a new student of anthropology, I found this course to be an excellent introduction to the discipline.
