What students said

MDES GU4218 · Fall 2024

Covered Shami specific vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Also discussions of levantine culture.

MDES UN1211 · Spring 2024

I feel like their involved so much learning of new arabic vocabulary and grammar rules in which can be quite overwhelming as you are constantly exposed to new words. The skills and knowledge I have acquired is the ability of identifying to identify the function of words in a sentence. I think this course actually exposed my flaws to even doing so but it taught me how rich the language of arabic is and once I continue to progress in my learning I will definitely owe it to this course in not only being a better communicator in arabic but in english as well.

MDES UN1210 · Fall 2023

How to speak, read, understand, and write, mostly about myself and my family/other people in standard Arabic.

MDES GU4210 · Fall 2021

In terms of skills, I learned a lot of grammar and reading skills. The class also discussed a lot of sub topics about Arabic literature or topics relating to the Arab world such as Orientalism, of which I learned a lot from a perspective not usually found in a Western classroom.

MDES GU4218 · Fall 2024

I learned words, grammar structure and songs about the Levantine Dialect

MDES UN1211 · Spring 2024

I really learned how to speak, write, read and understand Arabic in just one semester. I learned tons of new vocab, grammar, and improved my accent. I am way more confident in my speaking abilities than I was when I began this semester.

MDES UN1210 · Fall 2023

An introduction to the language of classical and modern Arabic literature.

MDES GU4210 · Fall 2021

I learned to think about the structures of both Arab and "western" society and compared views, mostly how some Arab thinkers view literature, poetry, language, community, representation and modernity. I learned to produce short articles and lengthy presentations on these topics. I combined advanced level grammar rules and expressions to develop my speech and writing.

MDES GU4218 · Fall 2024

This was like learning a whole new language even having experience with Arabic, but I felt like I learned so much in terms of Levantine grammar and vocabulary.

MDES UN1211 · Spring 2024

A great grounding in vocabulary, culture, grammar, syntax, and structure. Professor Reem covered it all and did a wonderful job throughout the semester.
