SPAN UN1102 · Spring 2024

In Lee Abraham's Spanish II class I learned how to understand expressions, pronouns, verbs, and so on which advanced my Spanish learning experience. Not only did he help us learn the material required for Spanish II, but he also taught us material from Intermediate Spanish I by teaching us newer material for that specific course. I learned how to distinguish past and present verbs and use them in a conversational setting.

Workload was just preparing for the test that came every other week. You can do this by paying attention in class, doing problems on the online textbook, or reviewing stuff he posts on courseworks on your own time. Basically nothing.

We learned conversational Spanish that would help us apply to international jobs and help the environment. We also learned several conjugations for future, conditional, and subjunctive. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2021 Course: SPANUN2101_005_2021_1-INTERMEDIATESPANISHI : SPANUN2101_005_2021_1 - INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I Instructor: Leire Alejaldre Biel

My skills in Spanish reading and comprehension greatly improved.

Professor Abraham's class was one of the easiest I've ever taken period, not just at Columbia. The other reviews are right in that he is super hyperactive and too excited to teach (and also weirdly caring -- like, cries in class when a student dropped because their schedule was too full caring --), but other than that he is really nice, supportive, and somehow manages to give almost no work/homework while still over preparing you for the ridiculously easy tests. Also, his end-of-the-year assignments (like the final project and oral presentation) were so low-key that I forgot I had to do them until almost the day of and still wasn't worried because they were that easy. I don't speak or read Spanish that well, and while this class did teach me a good amount, it gave me absolutely no stress or anxiety about doing work, tests, homework, or speaking in class like all other Spanish classes I've taken have. If you want a genuinely helpful and nice professor, an almost guaranteed good grade, and peace of mind, take Spanish with Lee Abraham. (By the way, I'm taking Intermediate II with a different professor now and I feel really well prepared for this class! He's a good professor/teacher while still being this easy/nice).

I relearned the value of learning for the content rather than the grade I receive.

SPAN C1201 · Spring 2023

Terrible and often error-filled MySpanishLab assignments weekly(ish). 3 compositions (with a revision and a reflection) that is graded easily. A sorta hard midterm (because he doesn't teach you anything) that he grades easily. Final with oral component.

If you enjoy witnessing a man go through his midlife crisis once a week while listening to the REASON you are learning something without actually learning the actual Spanish language, this is the class for you. It's a pretty easy A but you will walk out of the class knowing what timelessness feels like. Remember that scene in Interstellar when they are on the planet where every hour is 7 years for people on Earth? Ya, that is this class. The average day begins like this: a disheveled, rushed, coke addict walks in screaming "HOLA CLASE" while he hangs up his coat, tripping over a chair and accidentally elbowing a kid on the way. When he settles in, he will hand out half a tree of papers that makes you ask the question, "What the actual fuck is happening??" You most likely have on your hilariously small and slanted desk 3 packets. One contains every exercise and its mother from Gramatica Basica, the textbook made by the people who brought you things like Satan. One contains your essay assignment about a movie he thinks you will watch but you won't because why would you? He will not explain that essay assignment until the last 2 minutes of class, leaving you utterly confused for the rest of your days. The final packet is unknown, it will probably never be used, and is most likely just a waste of paper because fuck the environment. He begins talking about whatever topic you are le…

I learned a lot of vocabulary, grammar, speaking, reading, and writing skills from this course.
