Lamees Fadl

I learned how to clearly and thoroughly speak and write Arabic with proper grammar and various vocabulary words used correctly. In this course, I also learned how to find the roots and patterns of Arabic words, and I practiced listening to Arabic and understanding the ideas of a spoken Arabic passage.

This class is a continuation of the arabic language sequence - it is a little more focused on grammar than vocab than first year arabic classes were.

I would definitely recommend this course to another student because I learned so much Arabic. I used to be very self conscious about speaking and writing in Arabic, but now I am so confident about my Arabic skills. Lamees is an amazing instructor. She really wants her students to learn a lot, and Lamees, my classmates, and I built a strong relationship.

I have been introduced to the vast, broad, rich, and unique exposure of the grammatical and vocabulary of the arabic language. This class is finally something I truly want to absorb as much possible since I've enrolled in Columbia University.

I would recommend it if they were willing to put in the work and time. This class is five credits and a huge time commitment, but extremely worth it and the professors want you to succeed.

Learning Arabic pronunciation, grammar, and writing and conversation.

I'm not sure what the general standard for 1 semester of Arabic is in other universities, but we started off with the alphabet and then moved on to grammar concepts like sentence structure, negation, simple past tense and future tense. Throughout the whole semester we also covered a lot of vocabulary and how to deal with possessives, gender agreement, irregular plurals, and much more. We did not cover a lot of culture in the book, but Professor Fadl sprinkles some throughout the class and teaches us commonly used phrases that the book doesn't include.

How to read and write in Arabic, basic grammar concepts, and Arab culture

This class brought me from not knowing a thing about Arabic to having a solid foundational understanding of the language as well as Arab culture. I now know basic communication and some slang, as well as how to read.

I learned the Arabic alphabet, basic vocabulary, how to construct complex sentences in Arabic, and some cultural aspects.
