I gained skills in translating Homeric texts.

Learned how to read latin very quickly, and how to analyze latin texts.

We learned almost all of Mastronarde's textbook in rapid fire, and began to have a grasp on effectively translating. Professor Golab was excellent at explaining the nuances behind some of the forms that were unmentioned in the textbook, which massively helped ease confusion. I learned how to dissect sentences and parse their verbs effectively and quickly. Golab also allowed for creativity in our translations- obviously with the general meaning and aspects of the sentence kept intact- and being able to aim for more literary translations became a highlight of this class for me.

How to translate ancient Greek in its Homeric, prose type form and how to identify the grammatical forms of words and phrases

I learned a lot about Roman history and perspectives

I learned a wealth of knowledge regarding Latin grammar, vocabulary, and structure.

I learned all the basic principles of Ancient Greek.

I learnt more about the host-guest principle and the cultural context in general about Homeric poetry. i have learnt how to familiarize myself with the language and style of Homeric poetry

I would not suggest someone take Latin at Columbia without prior instruction, but if you are comfortable and know enough latin, it is an enjoyable and informative class.
