This course gave a broad exposure to papers relevant to IO, I learned several computational and estimation methods. The problem set was useful to gain coding skills and learn to apply what we did in class.
I was introduced to several structural model estimation strategies throught the recommended readings. I was also given a guided implementation of such a structural model for one paper in particular.
An overview of industrial organization, the Cournot and Bertrand model, game theory, perfect competition, monopolies
How firms operate in an environment of other firms and how they compete or cooperate and where the government comes into play
Development and estimation of dynamic structural models.
Markets with medium concentrations of power (between perfect competition and monopolies), Cournot and Bertrand Competition, some basic game theory, measures of market concentration and market structure, anti-trust issues including vertical and horizontal mergers, a bit about information economics.
Structural estimation of dynamic models.
Vertical and horizontal mergers, study of empirical papers, important concepts of game theory, price collusion, defining anti-competitive mergers.
I learnt dynamic structural models throughout the semester.
In this class we did some review from micro, then went on to focus on oligopolies and market power.
