I am leaving this class with an excellent foundational knowledge of a wide variety of Post-Freud theory, having had nearly none when I entered it. Adele Tutter, her guest lecturers, and the other students all contributed to making this class a challenging learning environment that also felt like a safe place to share ideas. I looked forward to this class every week.

We, as a society, have lost the ability to talk about Freud as a 20th century thinker. It offers a unique opportunity to cut through the polemics and idol-worship. I learned so much in this class. It's an unbelievably broad field and any course at this level could just scratch the surface of the different schools of psychoanalytic thought but Professor Tutter (and all of the guest lecturers she brought in, who were all phenomenal) did a fantastic job of giving us frameworks through which to view and compare various theorists. This course did a great job of going in depth on some major thinkers and movements in the field without sacrificing breadth.

This course surveyed the main strains of thought in psychoanalytic theory after Freud. We read texts from Bion, Laplanche, Winnicott, and others. The course focused both on theoretical and clinical application, and it was quite interesting to see how the two intersected.

I can't think of a better way to be introduced to Freud. Post-Freudian psychoanalysis. The two major figures that were not covered were Lacan and Carl Jung, and the rationale for this decision was that these figures are often taught in other classes. The focus of this course was to highlight other important figures in psychoanalysis who do not get as much attention, such as Melanie Klein, Loewald, Winnicott, Kohut, Laplanche, and Bion, to name a few. I agree with this decision, but others may not.

A (rather) comprehensive overview of psychoanalytic theories post Freud. Major developments and theories in object-relations, ego, self-psychology, relational, etc. An introductory course to sets of psychoanalytic ideas that are vast and deep. Prior knowledge to Freud could be helpful

This course was an excellent overview in many important Post-Freudian theory, from Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Winnicott, Bion, Fanon, and feminism and psychoanalysis, I learned a great deal at a high level about all of the ways that theorists took Freud beyond Freud and the ways in which those theorists built on, critiqued, and struggled with one another towards types of analysis that might be more historically specific for subjects and patients that Freud may not have been able to theorize or understand--psychotics, children, groups, the colonized and racialized. It helped me identify the thinkers I wish to pursue much more deeply and set me up for success in charting my own educational journey with the rare opportunity to experience a survey course in a seminar style.

I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn about the history of psychoanalysis and contemporary frontiers in the field. You can go into the class with little to no background knowledge and you'll understand what's going on, and any prior knowledge (not just from psychology or psychoanalysis) will be very stimulating to guiding your own learning as well as the class discussions.
