Pilates Mat · Physical Education
Pretty light workout with maybe 10-15 minutes of stretching at the end, 6 allowed absenses per semester for any reason.
Loved her, the class isn't too difficult, but still pushes you. Def recommend
I was worried that this class would be too easy/boring right after reading the previous review. It was quite easy. However, as the semester went on, I was sooooo glad that it was so chill and not as intense as typical workout classes because after a long day of academic classes I was definitely NOT in the mood to be further pushed to my physical limits. Talese is an absolue sweetie and makes sure to remind us to listen to our bodies and make our own choices about how much we push ourselves by giving us varying intensity options for certain exercises. She is super understanding and I'd def recommend this class with her! (Unless you're looking for a super intense workout)
There are 24 classes and you have to attend at least 18 of them. I ended up attending 22 out of the 24 because I loved the class and wanted to keep going even once I had fulfilled the requirement. The grade is Pass/Fail based on attendance and participation. You do need to participate in all the exercises, but she offers a lot of modifications if you are having trouble. It is completely possible to fully participate in the class even if you start as a total Pilates beginner (which I did!) but it will definitely be challenging, especially at the beginning. Take this course if you are looking for a Phys Ed course that will challenge you and push you, but will also be really rewarding and enjoyable.
I found myself needing to go to the gym on top of this hour-long class, which was frustrating. After each session, I often felt more like going to sleep than energized. While the class was educational about the body’s anatomy, much of this information could have been delivered via email or a short handout. Unfortunately, her lengthy explanations during our limited hour left little time for a meaningful workout, which only really happened toward the end of the semester.
I loved this course (Pilates Mat w/ Cynthia Lanzas)! I went into the class with zero Pilates experience and now, at the end of the course, I have learned so much about Pilates and improved my strength and form so much. Cindy is a wonderful teacher. She has the perfect mixture of offering modifications so you can tailor exercises to your own ability level, while also challenging us and making sure we were keeping up with the class and improving. Our class had a really great environment where we felt comfortable speaking up with questions or concerns and she would answer them thoroughly with care and respect. She is incredibly knowledgeable about Pilates and exercise in general and it really felt like she cared about each and every one of us and our journey with exercise. She knew us all by name, and if she noticed your form was wrong, she would come over and quietly help you fix it without calling the attention of the whole class, which I really respected because I know sometimes large group classes can be intimidating for people. All in all, I loved this class and it really inspired me to keep doing Pilates in the future. Side note: this course has a very strict late policy. The door closes 5 minutes after class starts, so if you're five minutes late or more, you just can't attend class that day. I made it work even though I had a class at Barnard that ended at 12:55 and my se…
I expected this class to involve actual Pilates, but for most of the sessions, it felt more like light movement rather than a proper workout. In the first few classes, the instructor talked far too much, leaving little time for physical activity. During the first couple of weeks, we were also required to participate in small-group discussions, which felt unnecessary and took away from the time we could have spent exercising.
