Everything was take home and TA’s grade everything : weekly quizzes on defining words that were talked about in the lecture (on the slideshow), two papers 2/7 of grade, no midterm (we had our first paper due around that time instead), and a final 2/7 of the grade as well (gives you 6 questions, expects 3-4 doubles spaced pages for each question, and does not expect any outside research, basically just very broad questions that the weekly quizzes helped me answer)

Very Easy. Only two papers due, both under 4 pages. A midterm and final that only consists of looking things up online.

Professor Nathans class is very difficult to sit through. His lectures are occasionally boring and sometimes he goes in circles in what he is lecturing about. I did not show up for many lectures (there was also a zoom option made after October) as everything was take home and I felt more confident looking over the lecture slides myself. This class was genuinely interesting, I just wish Professor Nathan was a better lecturer so I would have enjoyed the class more and felt more appealed to attend lectures.

I took this class as part of my major and because I was passionate about the subject, expecting to be able to sit through the class with blinders and just get this prof over with. I was wrong. This class had me considering changing my major because other upper-level classes I needed are only taught by this prof, and he is truly VERY bad. Lectures were quite boring and difficult to sit through, and he has the underwhelming tendency of being able to repeat himself five to six times per lecture, making it seem as he didnt bother to prepare much material. Most of the class didnt even show up, unless it was the final or midterm. The class is so basic that you can skip all of the lectures, not that I am advocating that practice, and still manage to get an A+. He is also VERY racially/culturally insensitive and allows students to be this way as well. On many occasions he has asked some Black Americans to speak about their culture, assuming they weren't from the US. He also has a very dangerous 'white savior' outlook to many human rights issues, implying that "wealthy, western countries" need to step in and coddle or heal poor, black and brown countries because they cannot do it themselves and we cannot expect them to make much progress by themselves.

Weekly quizzes - generous grading, based on the posted lecture slides. (2) 5-7 page research papers - incredibly academic freedom to talk about anything you want Take home final essays - fine

Dry lectures - you can get by without going to them. Very intelligent professor who is much better in office hours than in a big lecture.

Andrew Nathan is amazing! Super sweet and genuinely cares for his students. However, the TAs are HORRIBLE!!! They make the class unbearable. The TAs are on a rotating basis and theres like 7 of them and they all expect different things so you never know how to do well. Generally, they all grade super harshly and are just straight up rude when you question them. The take home quizzes that you get every week are meant to basically be easy 100s for everyone but the TAs make it so hard to get 100. Even on the essays, they just all have different expectations and are not clear with what they want until after you have submitted it. specifically, stay away from hedwig, nina, and daniil they are the worst! except you have no choice because it's basically a lottery of which TA grades your assignments

There were papers, take-home midterm and final, and a few check-in assignments. The workload was not super heavy.

The content of this class is interesting and a great broad introduction to the subject of human rights. Unfortunately, Professor Nathan is quite nice but a difficult lecturer to sit through. I had the class in Roone Auditorium and the theater seats, along with his lecture, were just setting me up to fall asleep. I have heard that more specific human rights courses are better if you are just interested in the field generally; if this is required for your major, best of luck.
