HRTS GU4950

This course provided a broad but great overview of different topics relating to human rights and mass atrocities. I especially appreciated our weeks on torture, policing, democratic institutions, and humanitarian intervention. As someone coming into the HRSMA program with an International Relations degree, I also really loved the ways in which topics in international affairs were incorporated into our discussions of human rights.

A relatively chill and very engaging class—my favourite that I've taken in the Human Rights department so far!

I learned about state-induced torture, totalitarianism, and the ways human rights are threatened by governments and institutions.

We examined how actors, domestically and internationally, used the power of the state to torture, repress and commit crimes against humanity often leading to totalitarianism. We then learned about the various actors and institutions, such as the UN, fight to protect the human rights of people globally.

I learned so much in this course! We went through so many human wrongs - from torture to mass incarceration and policing to genocide to totalitarianism. We also covered attempts to rectify these wrongs, like democracy and international bodies.

This class supplies students with a wealth of knowledge. So much valuable information. Professor Cronin is so knowledgeable about so many different things, and it is to every students benefit to enroll into this course. We covered an array of interesting topics, from torture, to state repression and terrorism, mass violence, civilian victimization, incarceration, and more. Each week, we left the classroom significantly more informed than when we had originally came into class that morning. That's what you hope for in a classroom. Students were eager to speak up and share, and Professor Cronin was kind and patient in allowing all students to share their thoughts. It is such a thought-provoking class. Truly one of a kind.

This class and the professor offers students an excellent opportunity to deeply engage with topics such as totalitarianism, democratic backsliding, and international institutions as it relates to human rights.

This course covers things that are absolutely crucial for you to know. They are covered in an engaging, easy to understand way, in an environment that promotes curiosity and kindness. If this course was offered to industry professionals in the human rights field, I am sure they would attempt to take it too. It fills in gaps of knowledge about these subjects that you may have had before you enrolled, gaps that you wish you knew the answer to, wish you had asked about before, and/or never even thought to ask. I learned the intricacies of international laws and regulations that go into interpreting how we address human rights from individual, state, and global levels. Great course for building public speaking confidence as the course is heavily seminar based.
