Joy Chia · 2026 · 2026

Professor Chia is really cool and kind but unfortunately this course really fell flat for me. I had so much hope in it being interesting and informative but the conversations never reached any sort of depth, the classes were somewhat disorganized, and I don't think I learned anything new. I hope that this is only because the course is so new and believe the class can be great in a few years with some more organization and desire to dig deeper with the students.

Critically analyzing the human rights issues in the United States and understanding social movements strengths and weaknesses

Lara Nettelfield · 2021 · 2021

This course gives a good survey of many of the most pressuring current human rights issues in the US today.

Joy Chia · 2026 · 2026

I had really high hopes for this class, and I really like Professor Chia, but I am a bit disappointed that I didn't really walk away learning much from this class. I think there were moments in the course that allowed us to see new perspectives I might not have seen before, but I was really looking to diving into the human rights in the U.S. whereas instead it felt like we glossed over it.

The theoretical and legal framework of social movements as it relates to human rights as well as a survey of human rights topics

Joy Chia · 2026 · 2026

This class unfortunately did not teach me as much as I hoped to learn. Professor Chia is great and has a great personality but the structure of the class was not the best.

Lara Nettelfield · Spring 2021 · 2021

It's a great class to have an introduction to human rights and it has applications for all social science based students 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2021 Course: HRTSGU4880_001_2021_1-HUMANRIGHTSINTHEUNITEDSTATES : HRTSGU4880_001_2021_1 - HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE UNITED STATES Instructor: Lara Nettelfield

Joy Chia · 2026 · 2026

I really gained a better understanding of how human rights work in the United States and how our imperfect systems are used to fulfill imperfect rights to protect as many people as possible. I learned a lot about how much the United States needs to improve structurally to be the country I would like it to be.

Joy Chia · 2026 · 2026

Definitely take this class!! So much fun and so interesting and engaging, and the professor is really funny and a great discussion facilitator.

Joy Chia · Spring 2023 · 2026

I just think I could have learned more about this topic in a different class. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Spring 2023 Course: HRTSGU4880_001_2023_1-HUMANRIGHTSINTHEUNITEDSTATES : HRTSGU4880_001_2023_1 - HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE UNITED STATES Instructor: Joy Chia
