I learned pinyin, how to read and write traditional characters, and selected vocabulary and grammatical structures.
I was surprised at how many Chinese characters I was able to learn in such a short amount of time. I had to manage a lot of my time around this course, but the extra effort helped me to succeed.
Moderate...exams every two weeks....daily dictation. Everything is standard by the department.
Regular Homework Assignments: 3 sections per week, approximately 1-2 hours to finish Vocab Memorization Test in class every day Essays: 3 throughout the semester Chapter Tests: 5 of them, 2 chapters included in each one (10 chapters total) 1 Cumulative Final 1 Skit
daily quizzes, tests on each lesson, homework, listening to tapes online, a final, a midterm(i don't remember if we had a midterm or not. All i remember was there were a lot of tests). The final was easier than some of the lesson tests. Don't worry so much about the final.
Not absurdly heavy but a fair amount. I think it took me about 2 hours for each homework. Part of it is vocab and part of it is grammar. Quizzes basically every class. Tests after every lesson. A midterm and a final. And about 3 compositions.

This course was essentially a kick starter in Chinese - you will learn a lot in a short amount of time.
She's a nice and approachable person, but her classes were very standard. Nothing too appealing. It's just your normal reading, writing, and dictation. However, she is very lenient with handing in assignments on time.
