This is a core course intended for undergraduate Chemistry majors and Chemistry doctoral students. The overall course grade is determined from homework, midterm, and final exam grades, with a small component for class participation. The homework is rigorously graded for accuracy as opposed to ungraded homework or homework graded based on completion/effort. This focus on rigorous grading may be a deterrent for some students. This, however, is clearly communicated by the instructor at the beginning of the course.

The material is great, so I would recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in chemistry! Group theory is incredible to learn and see how it builds on itself. I learned to create molecular orbital diagrams, describe the symmetry of a given molecule, understand character tables, paramagnetism, and Mulliken symbols. As well as to think critically about what a metal's position in the periodic table implies about its behavior as a lewis acid and determines how it will interact with different types of ligands.
