In my lab, I've only mainly gained technical skills to perform experiments. This course really trained me to have the critical mind of a scientist scientist. I gained the skill of being able to deeply analyze a paper, propose further steps and experiments, and defend my proposal
Heavy. 4 exams and you can drop one of them.
I was in the same class as the 1/3/10 reviewer, but I took the class as an undergrad, so the workload was a little different. The major difference was that the three "discussion" papers for undergrads were one-paragraph assignments on possible future experiments, and they were only worth 10% of the final grade. Also, we could drop any one of the four exams, including the non-cumulative final (which was essentially a fourth midterm). On exams, we got a choice of which questions to answer (usually 8/10). Finally, expect the reading to be heavy, since most chapters are 70+ pages. Only Dr. Miller assigns practice problems for homework.
Two midterms (able to do corrections for 20% of the points back), the class average for each was ~B+, and one final (which he set multiple days to take it to work around our schedules instead of the university final date). Three group paper assignments (read the paper and answer ~5 questions). One presentation per group, but it was pretty straightforward, and he already gave sources for it. I didn't have to spend too long on assignments during the week (everything was very spaced out throughout the semester and not overwhelming. I did have to study a lot for each exam, but if you take notes in class, it should be fine.

I am writing to confirm what other students have already detailed... the lack of organization, the grading... The mean of the first midterm (Fall 2019) was a 62.7 (out of 100) and the lowest grade was a 29. I cannot deny that the material covered in this class is interesting but the grading is not generous, so I guess keep that in mind as you consider your options.
The previous reviews are slightly harsh, granted the class is quite boring when she teaches, but I thought she explained the material thoroughly. I didn't buy the book (totally unnecessary to have it), so I don't know if she taught right out of it, but the only stuff that she put on tests came from lecture. If you take diligent notes in class, it's an easy A. She only taught the first half of the class this yr, and I did much much better on her exams than Chloe Bulinksi's (although Prof. Bulinski is ALOT more entertaining and engaging).
I was very frustrated with this class this semester, mostly due to Dr. Bulinski's poor teaching style. In addition to not specifying page numbers (seriously, "parts of chapter 16" is not a real reading assignment), she was an incredibly disorganized lecturer. Her slides containing experiments were not labeled (apparently, she hates labeling graphs), and her explanations were very spotty. Often, she would remember something she had forgot to mention and skip back several slides to make a point. Her disorganization made the lectures hard to follow. At one point, she suggested that while studying for a midterm, we should try to figure out why a certain slide is in the presentation. To be quite honest, I often couldn't figure out her organizational logic, even though I understood the information presented. I never followed her "three slide rule" (i.e., you have to know something if it shows up on at least three slides). The good thing was that she did post the slides after the lectures. The bad? Unless you took meticulous notes (and it was hard to do when she's such a disorganized lecturer), it was still difficult to understand many of the slides. Dr. Miller was a much, much better lecturer. All her slides were labeled and the lectures easy to follow. They mostly came straight out of the book (another bonus: she assigns specific page numbers!), so even if you missed something duri…
