As the title of the course suggests, we learned about the literature and methods of art history. Beyond that though, I think this course taught me how to critically think (and talk about) art history as a discipline and its methods, but also its faults and where the field is moving towards.

I have learned to scan and speed read, picking out important information by writing synopses and critical analyses, which is personally not an easy point for me. More importantly though, I stopped being scared of speaking up in a highly academic setting.
We read and discussed several of the most important art history authors, including Morelli, Vasari, Panofsky, Schapiro and Wolfflin. I was glad to become acquainted with the new perspectives and methods of analysis that entailed.
I learned what types of questions to ask of myself while close reading and attempted to learn to express myself more succinctly when writing.
Collaboration on methodological analysis of art history texts
I gained a very thorough - and most importantly, critical - perspective on the development of art history as a discipline, sensitive to what/who it defines as art/artist and what these changing definitions implicate.

This course was so incredibly enlightening in introducing me to the multitude means by which art history can be evaluated and understood. It gave me a good idea of the challenges that face the study of art history in regards to its limitations and its interaction with other disciplines.
