Collaboration on methodological analysis of art history texts

Had really high expectations for the class because the material was very interesting and, from the first 2-3 classes, I enjoyed Prof. Baumgartner's way of describing the material. Unfortunately, the lectures ended up feeling poorly taught primarily because a.) we would constantly run out of time discussing things & b.) the content wasn't taught in chronological order which, I had no problem with initially, but made the midterm/final more difficult to study for because we had to memorize a fair amount of dates. Also think the TAs and Prof did quite a bad job at clarifying questions/concerns regarding essays, and some of the prompts we had to respond to on the exams seemed sporadic and out of touch with the more central ideas discussed in class. Overall, would definitely NOT recommend taking this course.

I learned about some of the major themes in art history

Professor Baumgartner is an excellent professor to take this course with. Her classes strike a good balance between discussion and lecture, giving you both time to analyze yourself as well as learn from her expertise. She is a very fair grader and her exams are very straightforward and cover the main points she goes over in class. Overall, I learned a lot and this was a class I would always look forward to.

One small essay, one bigger essay, midterm and final (and the 25% attendance). They make you memorise like 20 slides for the midterm and 30 slides for the final, which makes me feel like education has regressed by 50 years. The good news about that is that it takes no skill to memorise slides, just time.

Weekly readings, which were usually pretty short (10-20 pages including a lot of pictures). Two short papers, a midterm, and a final. The midterm and final include memorizing works from the class and analyzing/comparing a few works. She adds all of the works for the final to a powerpoint, so you dont have to try to memorize every work covered in class and can focus on only the important ones.
