I learned more about 19th century art in general.

I learned how to discuss artwork with peers and how to actively perform visual analysis of nineteenth century artworks.

I learned about nineteenth century art and artists. I also learned a lot about general art history trends at the time, and was able to make connections between pieces of different genres and artists. This class pushed my art analysis and writing skills.

We spoke about topics recently covered in class.

I was well acquainted with nineteenth century art coming into the course, and so I really wanted to take it in order to be exposed to different perspectives on this period. Thus I appreciated Professor Gamer's constant efforts of challenging what has come to be defined as the "canon" by dealing with issues of colonialism, race, and gender.

About 19th Century artworks and their influence on the world and art today.

Aside from increasing my knowledge on 18th and 19th century work, I have been able to further improve my critical thinking skills by rethinking about the way 18th and 19th century themes and pieces are reimagined in the context of the 21st century. Throughout the class, I've honed my writing, analysis, and overall understanding of the ways in which art historians think, critique, and consider works in a range of lenses.

I learned about the history going on during many 19th century paintings. I learned about the lives of artists. I learned the reasoning behind and techniques of different art movements.

Visual analysis and comparison skills are very helpful for my career as an arts administrator. Through this course, I gained a stronger sense of how to do a formal and textual analysis of a piece of artwork. The course prompts me to think about the idea of revolution in different ways, politically, socially, and artistically.

I got a better understanding of 19th century art, and not just from the perspective of European art.
