How to think historically and consider why certain events happened and what were the motives people had behind their actions. I also like how the course wasn't just focused on France but also how France was being influenced by other countries.

I learned a lot about French history, and the threads that connect the country and language throughout centuries.

A lot about French history in the world, I particularly enjoyed the focus on Francophone countries other than France as I believe so many French classes at Columbia focus too much on only France itself.

I learned all about french history, from the year 800 - present. I also learned how to analyze primary sources in french, and look at history from all perspectives

I learned a lot about the history of France as well as revived my french reading and writing skills. This course also encourages you to do real quality analysis of the primary sources.

I found this course to be extremely interesting from start to finish. Professor Dodman does an amazing job of establishing central ideas/concepts early on in the course that we see build on themselves as we move through history. The readings were very manageable (in terms of time needed) and always interesting, course discussions about the reading were detailed, and Professor Dodman's lectures were really great and easy to follow.

Survey of French history from the Middle Ages to the present day

Gained a strong foundation of French history, learned how to better analyze in essays (specifically essays written in French), learned how to close read documents and relate the material in them to the time period in which they were written
