Standard across the dept. 10-15 vocab per day, 5-7 kanji per day, grammer quiz every 3 units, 2 midterms (take home), spoken oral final (on zoom) and take home final. Grading is heavily influenced by participation, attendance, and courseworks pre-class quizzes, so everyone gets a pretty good boost.

Eguchi-sensei is a brilliant professor and very kind. I had a lot of personal issues this semester and the professor's understanding meant a lot. Yagi-sensei is literally the kindest professor ever. Yes, the Japanese curriculum is hard, but she genuinely makes class so enjoyable (even though it's 10 am). Strong emphasis on continual Japanese use and she incorporated lots of authentic source material (videos that aren't the textbook, newscasts, one class we had some slides on slang, etc). She tries so hard to engage everyone, and is very sympathetic to extenuating circumstances, student life and workload, and tardiness. Not sure if this is a whole dept thing, but we also did this little journal thing that we pass around, and she even took the time to write an entry in each groups, that's how dedicated she is. Highly recommend her course!
Professor Nazikian is incredible and very understanding. She doesn't teach as a chore and he willingness to guide the students makes the class seem less difficult. The workload is pretty chill, just study in the morning before class. The other longer assignments can be completed in reasonable time if you are focused.
No expectations going in, but the class is still very interesting and I feel I have learned a lot. Yagi sensei has good energy and helps us be engaged in the morning. She answers all of our questions and makes sure we understand everything.
