8 homework problems roughly every 2 weeks (except when there's a quiz) and in each one the use of GenAI is fully allowed. 4 quizzes which again are pretty straightforward and closely match the practice material he provides. The final is also interesting. The way it works is there's going to be 5 parts, one of which is the actual final and counts for 10% of your grade. The other 4 parts are basically the quizzes - there'll be questions on exactly the same topics from the quiz which you can reattempt during the final (a list will be provided to you of which questions you need to attempt) and if you score higher on the question in the final, it replaces your score from the quiz.

6 homework assignments, all programming with some written portions, 3 tests/quizzes, one final exam, and one final group project. Definitely manageable. It seems like a lot, but he sets you up for success with each assignment.

Prof Murphy is super understanding, has very lenient grading policies, and it feels like he genuinely wants us to do well. His quizzes are not too hard, and he always provides enough practice material that very closely matches the stuff on the quiz so you know what to expect. He also does a great job of explaining Java concepts and I really enjoyed his class. All lectures are also recorded. Overall just a really nice understanding guy, great professor, and this class felt like a breeze thanks to Prof Murphy's teaching style.

I loved this class so much, and that's coming from someone who likes CS but tends to struggle with it. Professor Murphy is AMAZING. He made the class interesting and kept a good pace the entire semester while leaving time to go back and cover concepts that the class didn't understand. He and his TAs have a ton of office hours and are always available to get help. The course was really interesting, and I walked away having learned a lot. It wasn't just a review of data structures. Easily one of the best professors I have ever had, can not overstate.

Not at all bad for a cs elective here. Not extremely long homeworks, but very thorough and you WILL learn by doing them. Exams are fair, and you get a cool project to work on with a partner of your choosing.

I ended up picking this class through recommendation by another professor. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Professor Murphy is one of, if not the best, lecturers in the computer science department. He is extremely clear, organized, records lectures, uploads detailed notes, gives review questions, hosts lots of office hours, and cares so deeply for his students. I honestly learned so much more than I thought I would taking his class. I literally feel like I can code in Java so much better than I did before by learning the design fundamentals. You will not regret taking a class with Murphy :)

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING lecturer and professor. His style is extremely engaging. I really felt like he cared about the students. His grading was extremely fair. He was so extremely organized and detail oriented which I appreciated. His homeworks were super challenging but you really learn a lot. Exams are fair- if you can do the homeworks well and understand the concepts without using outside sources, you will do well on the exams. Attendance is optional, but it's best if you go to class.
