Class Attendance and Participation 30%, including several field trips outside of class time (nude figure drawing class, Gothic church visit, Frick museum visit, and one other museum of choice). Midterm Exam (in class) 25%, Two Essays (15%/10%) 25% (two pages each), Final Project/Presentation 20% (two page paper and very short, simple presentation). Grading was fair.

This class was about east asian art culture. I learned many artistic features about Korea, China, and Japan.

I think as Art Hum goes, I would avoid Professor Zhu's class if you have other options. But if you end up in her class, it isn't the end of the world. She is clearly passionate about art history but doesn't really teach you how to think about art. She assumes a baseline knowledge and comfort with art and spends the class mostly just asking students for opinions on the artwork. She assigns readings every class but you don't actually need to read them. I thought our class assignments were fair, but there will be a lot of field trips you'll have to spend time on outside of class. This bothered me a little bit because there was an expectation to pay for transportation and drawing supplies, and one field trip in particular to a nude drawing class was a three hour commitment (not including an hour of travel time) and had limited class availability, putting a significant strain on my schedule. I found this experience fun and interesting, but it was also a significant imposition for a three credit class. On a different field trip, I asked for accommodations for a physical disability (well documented by ODS) and was immediately shut down. I could have escalated my concern but decided not to and just sucked it up, but be aware that this could be something you have to deal with in Professor Zhu's class. This was such a fun class. We learned about a variety of arts from China, Japan, and Korea, dating back to the neolithic age and up to nearly present day.

There were three papers, a midterm, one short presentation, and finally participation and attendance. Grading could be a bit harsh during the papers, I got A-s for most papers. Barely got an A in the class, thought I'd get an A-. I'd recommend doing a different section for the class. Also, she was hard to reach and had a bit of an attitude when I asked to meet about the final essay and said email works the day the assignment was due.

I learned so much about Asian art, and customs. I did not know of art, and how to analyze it, but Professor Zhu creates an interactive class to help you learn no matter what level you are in.

I learned how to gather information from tangible objects; as well as analyze fine art.

AMAZING!!! Had an 8:40 class but still loved to get up for her class. She is young, chill, and dresses well. Brought us food sometimes too! She creates good conversation in class. Super interesting discussion even for an intro art class

I learned a historical context of East Asia and its relationship to art.

Through this course, I was able to learn about the similarities and differences between distinctive aesthetic traditions of China, Japan and Korea. I developed skills for conducting a visual analysis on selected works and learnt how to appreciate their style, technique and context.
