Beom Lee

The best teacher I've ever had. He's so kind and genuine, while also an amazing teacher who helps you understand the material. Comparable people in relation to Mr. Lee Beom: Kanye (Kim K era), Freddie Freeman in extra innings, Ghandi (prime), Mr. Chow from "The Hangover"

G.O.A.T. No questions asked. Think Jordan in 96', Brady down 28-3, or Four Days in October. Take Beom's class. Great teacher. Class act.

This is the second half of the intro courses for Korean and has a very manageable course load. Each class is a combination of learning grammar and practicing reading, writing, and speaking. Professor Lee asks students many questions throughout the class and will work through anything they are confused with. Overall, I found Professor Lee a very helpful and understanding professor. The lesson quizzes (not vocab quizzes) are pretty tricky, though, so I recommend paying attention in every class and studying the textbook before exams. There were also a lot of opportunities to have speaking practice with the TA that the professor encouraged and most students attended.

I learned a lot in terms of reading and writing Korean in a formal, academic setting. While I've read Korean texts before and written essays in Korean, this course really enhanced my skills in these areas. I learned how to analyze the texts we read on a deeper level than I was used to. We spent a lot of time trying to understand the author's intentions and hidden meanings that the author tried to incorporate through rhetorical devices and tone. I feel so much more confident in my ability to read, understand, and analyze texts written in Korean.

Professor Beom is by far the kindest Professor I have met at Columbia. I took Second-Year Korean with him and truly learned a lot. Instead of just teaching by the book, he definitely goes above and beyond to make sure that we are learning the language while understanding the cultural aspects of it (he shows us movie clips, game shows, songs etc) He doesn't rush through grammar points and spends a considerable amount of time on in-class practice. Instead of assigning a chapter worth of workbook homework after 2 weeks, he likes to split the homework into smaller daily ones which are easier to do and help with revision.At times, if we are confused about a grammar point, he'd even pause the class and go back and explain everything again. Even for vocabulary memorization, he utilizes pictures and quotes to help us really crystallize what we're reading. This is extremely important in language learning. If you need an easy class for your language requirement, Beom is the guy for you but if you, like me, are really interested in learning Korean and need a professor who truly cares about you acquiring the necessary language skills, I will unhesitatingly vouch for Prof Beom. Best class I have taken here!! Almost everyone in the class got an A. If you are not slacking off and are paying attention, it's really easy to get a good grade in this class.

Lessons 4-7 in the Integrated Korean Beginning 1 textbook.

It is pretty difficult, so I would only recommend if the student is really interested in the subject.

I learned a lot of new vocab, sentence structures, informal/polite tense speaking, listening lessons.

For the grammar points and vocabulary that I had already encountered on my own, this course was able to give me a better/different perspective, and I understand much of what I had previously learned much better, and I have also been able to grasp new concepts well.

Through this course, I became more comfortable reading and writing in Korean at a more advanced level.
