Weekly (ish) Assignments, about half are graded for accuracy, and the rest are for completion. Weekly Rise. 1-3 hours per week, depending on completion vs. graded assignments.

Coming from someone with no experience in data science / R, I had a really hard time in this class. While the course did have 3 professors and 5 TAs, they were all extremely unhelpful, especially with clarifying how to use R and complete the assignments. The lectures were boring; there is no need to do the readings since there is no application of them. Sometimes they do R workshops, which are probably the most unhelpful and confusing sessions. Overall, I think the teaching quality and actual learning quality of the course are incredibly poor, and I do not recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about health equity or data science. I think if you already know R / Data Science, this course could be more interesting/relevant. I think the one positive aspect of this course is that it is very easy to get an A. There are no exams, and there are just assignments where you can use the internet / collaborate with other people.

Attendance is mandatory and assignments are tedious and grading is too particular. Learning R is a good skill but they don't really teach you, you have to learn it on your own. Lectures were pretty interesting though and the professors were really passionate about the subject!

it's fine but just annoying. you have completion assignments worth 2 points each (most of the R assignments are completion), and graded assignments which are worth more. no cold calling in class, you can def do your online shopping no problem. i just really didn't like this class and felt like i didn't learn a lot especially compared to the amount of work it was. a ton of girls in the class, especially from barnard. i just wouldn't recommend. it's not very enjoyable, it's boring.

I would not recommend this course. Most people I've talked to from this class have been disappointed or just didn't like it. 1) they're very serious about attendance - they started off by opening a quiz on canvas for 5 minutes (at random times). but people would not be in class and still fill out the quiz. so one day, there was a second part of the quiz that was locked with a password. the password was "areyoureallyhere" or smth. and then they switched to a QR code on a random lecture slide and you had to fill out a google form. 2) you won't learn a ton about data science. you learn R but they don't really teach you. you learn some stats, but like not really. if you want to learn more data science this is not the class for you. you gain exposure, but i tell you, most people in the class could not articulate the data science stuff they "learned". 3) very particular about grading. in class discussions, they're kinda like, everything goes, your point is valid, etc. (like they validate some of the wackest comments) but with grading, they're super particular and you'll lose points for small little things. like they're kinda missing the point. 4) they use this textbook called data feminism and at first, i was like, omg so cool, interesting, how woke of them, etc. but eventually it just feels really performative. the professors are nice, it's def a public health course more than data…
