This course provides an introduction to and overview of population health and society. This course is based on the premise that population health is integral to a civil society, and that an equitable, civil society is key to the health of the population. Indeed, public health surrounds us. The overall goal of the course is for students to develop a public health frame through which to examine the world at multiple levels, from neighborhoods to a connected global community. As such, this course views the multifaceted nature of public health through a prismatic lens addressing key concepts and approaches and issues of historical and contemporary import. At the core of this course are the social patterning and production of health in neighborhoods, cities, and nations in the context of development and globalization. For the neighborhoods portion of the class, we will capitalize on New York City as an historically rich laboratory for an innovative group-based population health project. We will explore the novel patterns of health and challenges of New York City neighborhoods, as well as the city’s extensive infrastructure for solutions. This course seeks to answer the following questions: What is public health? How do social, economic, and political factors shape public health? What is the role of public health in civil society? What are the tensions among public health, democracy…
