Russian for Heritage Speakers · Slavic Languages
I learned Russian grammar, spelling, how to read and write well, and various aspects of Russian culture and history.
I learned how to read and write in Russian, and to speak and do all the above grammatically.
I got a greater exposure to hearing spoken Russian, which improved my understanding of the language.
As someone who came from a Russian speaking background, this course was super useful in increasing my speaking, reading, and writing skills. I feel much more confident in my ability to speak Russian because of it. The course work was pretty light – only about 2 hours of homework a week, if you work efficiently. Alla Alexandrovna is also a wonderful teacher – she is very friendly and approachable and very willing to explain anything you may not understand.
I would recommend this to any student who grew up in a Russian-speaking household, and would like to build upon they're skills. It really encourages you to do your won development! 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: RUSSUN3430_001_2021_3-RUSSIANFORHERITAGESPEAKERS : RUSSUN3430_001_2021_3 - RUSSIAN FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS Instructor: Alla Smyslova
Very helpful in building my language skills, as well as knowledge of Russian authors/figures (and classics of world literature)!
I learned more about how to properly read and write in this course and expand my ability to speak Russian in this course beyond the fluent household Russian I am used to speaking.
If the student needed to complete their language requirement and were qualified for this course I would recommend it to them.
