The course runs from Aeschylus and Sophocles to St. Augustine. We read the major ancient and classical works, which has left me with a better understanding of very early political thought.

Ancient political philosophy including Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero.

All about ancient political thought, from before written word to well into the roman empire.

I learned how political thought emerged and evolved from the ancient Greece to medieval Europe. what is a good gouvernement? who should be considered a citizen? what is virtue? all these questions were addressed in diverse and interesting ways.

This course proposes a general overview of antic political thought (+ one medieval author). Context is always provided by the professor and discussions between the students explore the main themes of each text. Excellent introduction for antic political thought !

This course provided an excellent overview of classical and medieval political thought. The readings were thoughtfully curated and the discussions were always enjoyable and thought-provoking.

I learned how to really dig into political thought, how to place texts in conversation with one another, and how to have productive discussions about the texts we read. I also learned a lot about ancient greece and rome and how political thought developed temporally in both. I also learned how to write about political thought and use the texts I had read to develop and analyze a question over a long period of time.

Through learning about a myriad of Greek and Roman thinkers, I was able to make connections and trace the roots of modern political thought to its origin. I have greater insight into notions of virtue, justice, excellence, and morality.
