As a heritage speaker, I felt like this class was very much relevant for my fluency level. I learned the proper grammar for a lot of the sentences I had been saying incorrectly, and learned the cultural connotations to certain uses of language. I had previous knowledge of most of the vocabulary, but it was useful to see the correct spelling and internalize them again in an academic setting. I learned what kinds of speech to use in more formal and academic settings, along with correct the ways I should use language conversationally. There were a lot of cultural lessons that taught me more about the culture in Korea, which were very useful because I was only exposed to Korean-American culture. Being able to speak, read, and listen to Korean on a regular basis helped refine all of these skills.

I would definitely recommend this course to heritage speakers because the course material has been very useful and relevant to improving my Korean. I feel more confident speaking to my family or sending text messages in Korean now, which makes me happy and relieves a lot of anxiety. Professor Jung is also a really great teacher, and always willing to help. She creates a fun and engaging class environment, and the way she teaches grammar is really clarifying.

I learned more than I ever thought I would learn about korean vocabulary, grammar, and culture

Ji-Young Jung · 2026 · 2026

Lots of new Korean vocabulary and grammar. There were lots of opportunities to improve and become more confident of your Korean speaking skills. I learned so many things about Korean culture that I was completely unaware of and the class was genuinely enjoyable.

This is probably the best course that's worthwhile of my tuition I've taken so far at Columbia. The class is a big commitment because it meets 4 times a week and can be a hassle to work around scheduling your other classes but it's worth taking if you have some background in Korean. I felt that the level of difficulty was just right and the class never felt too long because there were so many entertaining moments during class. I've learned so much Korean and I actually started texting my parents in Korean. Professor Jung is a really fantastic professor with lots of interesting stories and makes the classroom feel inclusive. I also felt that she really cared about all of our successes. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2023 Course: KORNUN2221_001_Fall2023 : Accelerated Korean for Heritage Speakers I-KORNUN2221_001_2023_3 - Accelerated Korean for Heritage Speakers Instructor: Ji-Young Jung
