What students said

Jerry Neumann · 2016 · 2016

Individual paper, discussion, attendance, group paper.

Jack Mcgourty · 2012 · 2012

10 pages per week 40-60 page business plan final 3 presentations NOT WORTH IT!!

Gerard Neumann · 2023 · 2023

Lots of discussion posts with smaller assignments together worth 50%, and two group papers worth 50%. TAs grade smaller assignments and prof grades papers. Doesn't take a lot of time to do but if your group members are known to be unreliable, make sure to start early!

Was in his IEOR 4998 class in 2015 Fall. Overall, not a bad class. But getting up on Friday mornings can be a pain and hence many people don't show up and attendance is often taken. The grading depends a lot on the TAs. I got 100% on all assignment and thought this class is chill, but I also know other people who did poorly. I think the trick is to make the paper looks nice i.e. use a lot of graphs and make it pretty like a pitchbook in banking. For me, it is an easy A. The material isn't hard and it is interesting.

First off, Jack missed well over half the semester. Columbia is finally cracking down on these nut jobs though. The IEOR department informed me that they will be choosing a new professor for next year. The TA's were awful human beings that looked as if they wanted to shoot your before they shot themselves. I believe no one wanted to be in that room. The "special" presenters were also quacks filled with fluff. These people belong in the Business School and not in Fu. Do not take a class with Jack. Fortunately, those who sign up for this class next year won't have to worry.

It was a chill class. Lots of people in the class seemed to have entrepreneurial experience. Getting up on Friday mornings was pretty painful, I tried to go as much as possible because he takes attendance randomly. Was very interesting but sitting through 2 hours of lecture while your friends are enjoying the weather is not super fun. The content isn't challenging but it does help if you have some kind of background in accounting as he does not go into a lot of depth. It's a lot of prof going through slides and then through the case studies. Grading depends on the TAs and they do not explain their numbers, which seems entirely arbitrary.
