Weekly HWs up until the midterm (20%) Midterm (30%) Project (50%)
AI, Games, and Markets The name sounds cool, and it is a novel course since the IEOR dept. is apparently discontinuing the original game theory course. Turned out to be the worst course I have ever taken in my formal education. The material was taught very poorly and on surface level. So that Prof. Kroer could "read interesting projects about varying topics", the entire curriculum was rushed through before the Oct. midterm and then he went back and went in depth again. But this means we were severely underprepared for the midterm, with a lack of depth of understanding. Prof. Kroer went through a total number of numerical examples that I can count on my fingers. For a math class, this is absolutely intolerable. Prof. Kroer is teaching from his own textbook that is unpublished, unreviewed, unedited, and for the most part completely identical to the slides (the slides are worse, they don't even provide enough information). The midterm was very bad, with an average of around 30/100 and a standard deviation of about 10%. The class is open to all levels (BS, MS, PhD), and being an undergrad, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Prof. Kroer has mentioned that he will curve different students differently, however, which is a blessing. Homeworks and midterm were graded very obscurely with little to no good explanations of the answers in the solutions released afterwards. Solutions were…
