Different forms and genres of Latin Music and its history. The development of genres like merengue, bachata, salsa etc.
This course gives a broad historical overview of Latin music from its origins to contemporary styles, touching on music theory, analysis, criticism, and cultural issues of identity that connect music to political, economic, and social (specifically racial and national) issues in the region.
Learned about many different traditional forms of music in Latin America and their African influences. Focused on many different genres and artists through the student presentation which were a great part of the class.
I learned about the hybrid construction of identity in Latin America that directly reflects a mixture of traditions across racial lines in Latin America. I learned about how music genres emerged from indigenous and African influences, largely influenced by the slave trade, and also how colonialization impacted and continues to impact how we define latin american identities. I learned of the political, social, and economic factors that fueled these Latin American music booms in the United States.
Learning the history of music and how it shapes our identities today really helped give a new perspective to how influential latin artist are in terms of helping the community, bringing awareness, and sharing the culture.
This class is great for anyone interested in Latin American culture and/or music generally, and for people who are self-motivated to learn about this subject.
I believe that I did learn a lot about Latin music, but I wish we could also dig deeper into concepts such as Latinidad and how Latin American artists chose to identify with certain indetities and what that suggests. There is a lot of reading, but it becomes really exciting to see the connections between music and identity.
