We learned about the history of Asian Americans in the United States, as well as their representation in film. We discussed immigration, identity formation, community building, and representations of masculinity/femininity.

This course is great for 1st & 2nd years, or those with not as much familiarity with Asian American history. The films work great in tandem with the course readings to introduce concepts crucial to Asian American studies. Personally, I've taken other Asian American studies courses prior to this one, so I was familiar with a lot of the content prior to taking the class. Nonetheless, the films were still really enjoyable, and I found class discussions fruitful. 1 Columbia University: Arts & Sciences Fall 2021 Course: CSERUN3922_001_2021_3-RACE&REPRESENTATIONINASIANAMERCINEMA : CSERUN3922_001_2021_3 - RACE&REPRESENTATION IN ASIAN AMER CINEMA Instructor: Mario Eric Gamalinda

I loved hearing the perspectives of all my peers. I'm not a CSER major and am unfamiliar with race theory, but do a lot of advocacy for Asian-Americans. I learned a lot from the films we watched, listening to other people, and the overview the Professor gave us at the beginning of the semester.

Quite a bit about how identity works in Asian-American contexts and how that relates to the larger nation. I learned quite a bit from the perspectives of other classmates, comprising a wide variety of Asian-American students.

I learned a lot about how films about Asian Americans have evolved, especially as Asian American directors increasingly make films reflective of their personal experiences, that help add nuance and diversity that reflects the wide array of experiences captured under the umbrella term of "Asian American." Also, I learned a lot more about new parts of Asian American history that I hadn't gotten exposure to, such as the American colonization of the Philippines.
