Whiteness, Sentiment and Political Belonging · Ethnicity And Race Studies
I learned about the history of "whiteness," as both a concept and a politically loaded idea with material consequences. The course provides a deep understanding of how racialization and our understanding of whiteness has influenced our everyday experiences as well as society as a whole. The class also dives into the role of feelings and emotions in politics, which gave me an understanding of politics, law, and society that I have never been exposed to before.
I learned to close read difficult academic texts, use theoratical frameworks and applying them to my experience. I also was introduced or reintroduced to a series of concet such as white guilt, white supremacy, empowering affect or liable affect....ect
This course has significantly improved my critical thinking skills, my ability to connect theory to reality, and my understanding of whiteness, race, and racialization. As a white person who wants to be a better ally to people of color, this course provided unparalleled insight into race, racialization, and my own implications of them by making legible aspects of race and racialization that white supremacy makes invisible. While I think this is an important class for everyone, I encourage literally every single white person at this school to take this class.

While I felt that this class was really interesting and really changed my worldview and critical thinking abilities, because we covered so much in such a short period of time, I don't necessary feel like I have a specific knowledge set that I have gained.

A truly excellent and timely class. Professor Fennell’s class provides the opportunity to engage in a cross-cutting and multi-disciplinary examination of historical and modern conceptions of whiteness and its cultural, physical, philosophical, political, and social effects. This course encouraged me to think outside of the frameworks I had been previously taught and bestowed upon me a wealth of diverse perspectives and schools of thought. I could not recommend this class enough for students who are questioning the destructive ways in which whiteness as a form of property and expectation is built into the fabric of our social systems.
The best class I have ever been in. Professor Fennell embodies and enacts a truly reciprocal and open pedagogy in which students are able to engage in reasoned and stimulating discussion.
