I learned about the mechanisms of experimental approaches including PCR, electrophoresis, cloning genes in bacteria and sequencing.
Part I – DNA purification, isolation, and amplification/ cloning techniques. DNA/Oligonucleotide synthesis and sequencing methods. Focus on both old and new technologies. Part II – Protein purification/ isolation techniques, as well as synthesis and sequencing methods. Assays and strategies for identifying/ analyzing protein-protein interactions and structure/functional analysis of protein-DNA interactions. Brief coverage of genome editing technologies/ strategies. Focus on more contemporary technologies – those most commonly used as well as up and coming methods.
A lot of molecular biology techniques, sequencing methods
I learned a lot of new techniques in biotechnology from this course but also a great deal of the learning I had to do on my own as there were several points in the homework assignments that were not covered in class thoroughly.
I learned so much about biological engineering and mechanisms to study molecular systems. It's a very fundamental course that taught from the perspective of solving biological problems that one would encounter at the bench.
The content is vital, but there are shortcomings in information delivery. If it were not a requirement for the degree, I would not recommend. Also taking into account that the information for these technologies is readily available on the internet and common practice in a majority of publications in the field. This course taught me a lot. Professor Kalderon demonstrated the core principles of the course and Dr. Chasin did an awesome job of presenting the applications of these foundations. This class haddifficult material.
