Exoplanet detection methods; how we know what we do (and don't) know about exoplanet properties including masses, radii, atmospheres, compositions, etc; planet formation (a lot of this since it is Professor Huang's area of research); and a very high level overview of astrobiology concepts (i.e., the course material is weighted way more on the exoplanet side than on the astrobiology side).
I learned elementary stellar astrophysics and the physics of planetary formation. We then discussed the history and methods of detection and investigation of extrasolar planets. We also surveyed the current theories and understandings of astrobiology including the investigation of an alive planet, the investigations of extremophiles, and even evolution on Earth.
Great course on exoplanets and the search for life in the universe.
I learned so much about how to think both qualitatively and quantitatively about topics related to exoplanets, protoplanetary disks, and astrobiology.
The first half of the course was dedicated to learning about physics behind planet and stellar formation while the second half was dedicated to biology segment of astrobiology.
I learned about the methods of discovery in detecting exoplanets as well as the science and exciting prospects of the field of astrobiology.

This class covered a great deal of introductory stuff with intense physical detail. Professor was great at explaining each step and giving general examples for complex concepts. We covered nebulae, star, and planet formation as well as plenty of theorems associated with those. orbital dynamics and star systems and finally, exoplanets, characteristics of life and where life might potentially occur. Syllabus was covered very well!
I learned a lot about exoplanet detection, planet categorization, tidal forces, and astrobiology.
Professor Scharf is no longer teaching at Columbia, so this question is henceforth irrelevant.
