Terryanne Maenza-Gmelch

This class is overall pretty easy. I took this to fulfill my lab class and did not P/F it and I am doing well. The test questions come straight from the info on the slides so as long as you study them you will do fine. I am not interested in environmental science so I find the lectures a bit boring, but Terryanne is super nice and funny.

This was Terryanne's first semester teaching Workshop, and it was slightly evident but not necessarily in a detrimental way that really impacted my group. It was just more so like if we were to ask her a question she would tell us that she would check with Martin first and then get back to us. For workshop, the class basically gets sorted into two groups that work on different environmental consulting like projects for different orgs (one prof leads each group). Although I had originally wanted to do the other project, I got sorted into the project where we helped Black Rock Forest with various things like increasing their energy efficiency, looking into green technologies, etc. It was a pretty interesting experience to actually work on a tangible project and get a glimpse into what a career in environmental consulting would be like. Unlike typical courses, this was a lot more collaborative and student-led, so I think your experience can vary a lot on who your group leader ends up being (you elect someone at the beginning of the year to be the group leader - they basically just communicate with the clients on behalf of the team and set the timelines) and your teammates/if they actually do work, but most ppl taking the course are juniors and seniors, so they don't slack as much.

Terryanne is a wonderful lecturer. It is clear that she is deeply passionate about what she teaches, which greatly increased the quality of the class for me. The workload is very manageable and lecture notes are always posted, although I did enjoy going to lecture as Terryanne was engaging. She is also good at answering questions, even in a large lecture setting, and holds a student-driven review session before each exam.

"Boring name; great class" Basically we met once a week and during this meeting there was a lecture for half an hour and then a walk around riverside park. After spring break, the class stopped meeting during the week and instead went on field trips to various parks in the area. I would recommend letting her know when Bacchanal is because my class ending up being on a field trip during it because no one told her. She is very accommodating at the beginning of the semester on dates. Terryanne is the best. She loves what she does and she is fair. There are a lot of assignments but a lot of them I did during the lectures and they didn't take very long.

this class is so much fun. well, sometimes its a drag meeting one time a week for so long, and sometimes it got a little quiet with just 10 people, especially when 2 or 3 didnt show up, but Terry-A is a funny person and loves dendroecology like no other woman. she is very chill and doesnt make you work hard although the harder you work, the more touched she is. this class was enjoyable and the workload was pretty light. a couple lab write-ups, a final project, and short reading quizzes that i dont think she actually counts.

This definitely isn’t a difficult course but I did not like it very much. The class exams are okay as long as you just know the information from her slides and answer the reading questions, and the assignments she gives are mostly just for completion. However, the professor is boring and she is dismissive when you try to talk to her at times.

Really depends on your project and the timeline that your group leader determines for the team. We would meet basically every class session to either talk about our next steps, have working sessions, or work on our presentation/run through it. We had to give a midterm and final presentation to the client through a deliverable type format and then they would ask us questions about the presentation afterwards. the presentation was around like 50 mins which seemed rly intimidating when I first heard it but divided amongst everyone in your team you only end up needing to speak for maybe like 5-6 mins so it's not too bad. overall, maybe spent like 4-5 hours a week on this course.

If you've taken APES, you're basically good for this course. Terryanne posts lecture slides before each lecture and this is pretty helpful for following along. You should basically memorize this information for the exams though. Also, it was kind of stupid how the only way you would be able to get an A+ in the class was to get a perfect 100. I think an A was like 93-99.99 lmao. But I think this does go to show how easy it can be to get an A in the class, so I think they're trying to prevent that many people from getting A+s. The lectures are not recorded but attendance isn't taken, so you could just hope she doesnt say anything that important in lecture and just memorize the slides for the exams. Terryanne is a bit monotone tbh but I do think this class is a pretty easy A if you just memorize all the information lmao. I think I got a 100 on the first exam and then like 96 on the second one. The class average was around 80s for the exams I think. Make sure you get into a lab first tho!! being in the lecture doesn't mean you're in the class if you're not in the lab.

Weekly bird song quizzes (studied 15 minutes before) Weekly readings with a response emailed to her 2 paper presentations (took me 30 minutes outside of class) Trip to the American Museum of Natural History and WKS that doesn't need to take long 2 lab reports that took about 2 hours each 2-3 field journals 1 exam in class which she tells you what will be covered 1 take home exam Final is a slideshow of birds / trees to identify. #simple

The lectures were very well organized and easy to follow. It is taught to non-science people, so the language used is very accessible and easy to understand. Terryanne is very good at explaining scientific concepts in nonscientific words. There is no textbook for the class, all of the homework readings are New York Times articles or something similar. I would highly recommend this class to everyone because I felt that what I learned was very relevant and necessary knowledge to understand discussions surrounding climate change and global warming. As Terryanne said, you will be ready to take on your climate change denier relatives at the Thanksgiving dinner table and win.
