Louis Moffa

Basically the core book list; weekly reflections (~250 words) graded based on completion; 1 final essay at the end of each semester; 1 final exam. First semester we had 2 midterms (1 of them being passage IDs and the other was in-class essay writing); second semester we had 3 quizzes without a midterm - the quizzes were just passage IDs. Very fair workload.

Attendance/Participation - 25% of your final grade In-Class Assessments (Two in-class short-passage analysis quizzes; two in-class long-passage analysis quizzes (the first is graded p/f); an annotation exercise (graded p/f)) - 25% of your final grade Reflections (Weekly reflection posts, graded on completion. STRONGLY RECOMMEND taking a class with Louis!!! He is very knowledgeable on all the books and leads insightful in-class discussions. Louis is a very kind and understanding person with any extensions or other accommodations you need. Go to his office hours! I've yapped in OH over an hour for a couple times. Through one-on-one conversations, you really dig deeper into parts of the book and he is able to answer almost all of your questions. Lenient grader on tests and essays.

If you can choose your professor for LitHum, you have to choose Louis. Louis is highkey the best professor I had this semester and probably will be the best professor I will ever have at Columbia. I hate literature and history and haven't picked up a book if it is isn't Harry Potter in the last 5 years, and he made me actually enjoy the course and all the teachings. He makes it super easy to get feedback and is very flexible with scheduling office hours. To get your quiz scores and feedback, you have to go through office hours, which is a blessing in disguise as it lets you get actual feedback from him. he is so nice and makes the class enjoyable, and everybody genuinely enjoys the class. If you can select your professor for lithum, you have to take him.

1 final project/essay at the end of the semester, a final exam, midterm, & 2-3 quizzes

3 Passage ID tests, 2 Passage analysis tests, Lit hum final, weekly reflections (takes 20 minutes), participate regularly

I loved his teaching style, and he knows a lot about the books he teaches. He's really fair and approachable. Not sure if he's teaching next year but you should definitely take Lit Hum with him if you can

Great guy and great teacher too, do not take this class if you plan on getting by off spark notes tho. you will not be able to follow the discussions as they get very into depth and will get destroyed by the passage IDs. I have no complaints about the Professor tho and if you're passionate about reading and discussions, he's the professor to take

We had a midterm for only fall semester and a substitute of 3 quizzes spring semester. You will never go into a quiz or test unprepared because of the reviews and the discussions in class. Fair grading as long as you try your best. Overall fair workload.

Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had and I 100% recommend you remain in this section even though it's an 8:10am. Louis is so kind and the most understanding person. If LitHum was a required core class for all of undergrad he'd be my first pick. I don't think you'll ever hear a bad review about him because he's so amazing.
