The history of immigrants and immigration in New York City

I thought the chosen readings were wonderful and helpful in determining how to proceed with my research. I would, however, have liked if more time was given to focus on our individual projects, being that this course usually feeds into the thesis course in the Spring. I learned a great deal about the history of immigration to New York City from a wide variety of angles.

We learned about the history of immigration to NY. One of the most interesting courses I've taken so far at Columbia. We read about various immigrant groups and how they adjusted to New York life. Each week we read and discussed the intersection of immigrants and politics, race, housing, health, education, etc. It was absolutely fascinating.

I learned about immigrant presence, settlement, and issues throughout NYC history until today. We focused on specific topics, like housing and political reforms, and on the different settlement patterns of ethnic groups in NYC throughout history.

I learned a lot about immigrant history, particularly the skill of viewing history through an immigrant-centered lens and considering the broader trends of the foreign- born within the United States. I also found this course quite helpful in helping me draw meaningful connections between the historical immigrant experience with current events, as well as my own life.

The history of immigrants in New York City and how to connect it to present patterns
