Jeremy Dodd

Content can be hard if you never took physics in high school (unlike a lot of other people in my class). Get help when you need it. Lecture is kind of boring and not helpful in my opinion and I felt like even if I went I didn’t learn much. I just used outside resources to learn the content.

If you are like me debating taking 1401 and 1601, just know Jeremy Dodd does not teach. You will be in a class full of people who already know the material and are succeeding soley off of prior knowledge. I did not learn anything from Dodd, only from my study group. Also, he doesn't have midterm (or final) review material....

Dodd is a fantastic professor and taught me how to learn and enjoy physics. Very clear, thoughtful, accessible course. Pedagogy is stellar.

Take Dodd take Dodd take Dodd. He is very kind and a great lecturer and will actually teach you something. The class is obviously not easy, but Dodd helps you through it.

Midterms were kind of hard but decently generous on the regrades. Lecture is not always interesting but attending recitations is useful. Dodd is probably the best and most experienced physics professor so I would recommend taking him if you can.

if you have no intro to physics you really have to start paying attention early. ace the first midterm b/c it's the easiest. fair class but can be challenging if you know nothing whatsoever. dodd does not respond to emails lol.

I took the 1403 as a summer course and got an A without much pain. To clarify, I am an engineering student who has to take an annoying natural science course to fulfill my track. Being said, I am not a physics person. Professor Dodd is, as mentioned in all comments, warm, helpful, approachable. It was a pity that I didn't take much use of his office hour, but I am sure it would be of great help to everyone. Professor Dodd assigns homework through Wiley Plus web assign, which is exactly the same thing as the textbook exercise. However, there was a time that he assigned several non-textbook problems which required some derivation. Not that intimidating at all. Jeremy also posts literally ALL the helpful stuff on coursework's. Don't forget to take full advantage of them. Our TA was Zac. I barely went to his recitations though I think they would be helpful if you need someone guide you through textbook exercises. Honestly, I really preferred solving them by myself. The midterms and the finals are pretty reasonable in difficulties. If you solve all the problems he assigns, well at least that's what I did, you will probably get a grade better than your expectation. DO take Professor Dodd's class! It's painless, clearly structured and, better than most physics classes in high school, won't make this subject intimidating for a non-physics-major student like me.

Since most of the other reviews are from people who aced AP Physics C and took this class, I’ll say right off that my perspective is different. I did not take AP Physics, or even E&M physics in high school really. Coming into this class all I knew was V=IR. I took Dodd because I figured I could drop down if I needed from 1601 into 1401 and I probably should have because everyone in 1601 knew more than me coming in, but I stubbornly stuck with it until Christmas and then, hearing that 1602 would be a more level playing field, I decided to stick with in for semester two. On paper, Dodd doesn’t seem like the best professor, and if I were to describe what about his teaching style worked I would not be able to. He gives weekly 10-problem PSets (on masteringphysics.com), and asks you to read the book. I read the book but not in sync with the course (all at the beginning and end of the semester). I went to most lectures and feel that I got a lot out of them, I think that this is why I did better than most people, many of whom did not show up for his 10am class. I also went to recitations and felt that they were very productive (again most people forego this. bad idea). My TA Zac was amazing. honestly idk about his 1400/1600 level classes, but 1200 was pretty chill. straightforward content and hes helpful in office hours if you need him. its basically content from ap physics 1 and you can always refer to things like khan academy for help. most people didnt even go to lecture and did fine.

Dodd is a great guy but not the best professor. I wouldn't avoid him necessarily, but he is not a great lecturer. I learned a lot from his PSets, but that is only because I had a great study group. We struggled through them together. His lectures are too basic to be at all helpful, and the notes we are expected to read for the class are too complex to be helpful most of the time. The exams are fair. If you understand the PSets and recitation work, you'll be fine.
