Take Chinese at another university/college. Columbia uses the worst textbooks. Chinese courses at other institutions use Integrated Chinese, which is a much better organized textbook.
Hao Laoshi is a very good teacher and class is always a joy to attend. She is also very funny in a dry humor type of way.
