I learned about the post-colonial history of Latin America, and I was able to practice writing in Spanish.

Learned about history of Latin America from the colonial periods and afterwards - focused on topics as colonization, civilization and barbarism, modernization, and more.

I learned about different cultures and histories in Latin America and practiced my speaking and composition.

A LOT about colonialism, politics, culture, and art in Latin America. Broad-stroke views, but I honestly felt pretty immersed in the material and through our classes.

I learned how to improve my reading comprehension and my grammar.

I learned about the history of Hispanic cultures from the early 1800s to the present.

I will reiterate what I mentioned in my overall assessment of the class: I was very frustrated by this course. I felt like the class was very unorganized and we were barely able to get into the history because of time constraints. Often times, we did not even get to discuss in-depth the material we were supposed to read or watch for class. In addition, the course was often dominated by native Spanish speakers, and to be honest I don't understand why they are not placed directly in the high-level Spanish courses offered at Columbia. I felt like the content and the level of Spanish was all over the place, and the teacher's feedback was often inconsistent from assignment to assignment. It's an easy A for people who are from Spain and Latin America, but not necessarily interesting or enriching for people who are genuinely interested in developing their knowledge of the language or the region.

If required for your major/concentration or if you're super interested in a general overview of Latin American recent history, it's a very useful class.
