A Columbia gem. Take this class. He is super knowledgable and wants you to do well. If you have any interest in art or Ancient Greece, sign up for this class!

Because of the previous positive review on Professor Schneller, I took this class out of the motivation to take a chill class for Art Hum as a stressed-out junior for my CC requirements. To do so, I said yes to his class even if it is 8:40a.m. in the morning. But this decision would soon prove to be one of the worst I have made about courses here. It is true that he tells you what he will test you on before exams so there are no surprise elements. If you have worked, you will get good grades. But this does not mean that his class is easier or chiller comparing to Art Hum in general. Art Hum, from most what I have heard of, is pretty chill. And many of my friends take art hum with professors who don't even give finals or give take-home finals or have much shorter essay assignments than David Schneller. I remember when I was stress finishing up Schneller's 5-7 page first essay, my friend just cheerfully got their 1/2-page essay assigned. It is further more frustrating that Professor Schneller doesn't give out A+ no matter if you have got all the dates/material/identification correct for every single work of art on the exam he gives you. You do NOT get A+ even you have NO crosses throughout the exam as well. Professor Schneller is extremely knowledgeable in Greek art and teaches the material perfectly. Any questions a student had (he learned everyone's name in the lecture) he generally could answer or would be willing to go out of his way to answer you in the future once he got a more complete answer. He was very generous with his time and office hours in helping students learn how to study for art history exams or how to write art history papers as well. Lecture and exams were very standard for an art history class and felt very fair as he would give the possible images for the exam ahead of time and had thoroughly discussed them in lecture at some point. If you are willing to actually memorize identifications of art works for exams, I would highly recommend this course with Professor Schneller to any student who wants to learn about Greek art.

David Schneller is a nice man and certainly knows how to keep you awake at 8:40am. The class was not difficult and David is super cheerful and funny. His background is in classical art so he really made the beginning of the semester interesting. However, I felt as though his class was geared mostly towards people who had no background in art and were taking art humanities because it was required. He really tried to make the paintings/sculptures/architecture interesting but I think he often overgeneralized the works and prepped us on how to memorize info for the midterm/finals without really teaching us to understand the art from a deep, critical level that I had hoped for. If you have some background in art or art history and looking to push yourself, you're going to leave this class not satisfied - I would look for a different teacher. However, if you're not interested in art and looking for a chill class (and an early riser) that's an easy grade - definitely take this.
