SO. MUCH. READING. But - it is worth it!!!! This class's syllabus is crazy - so many amazing primary sources and fantastic secondary ones, too. Spent prob 4-7 hours on readings a week, and that's with skimming. I skipped the textbook chapters, which I think was actually a good call, but that would've added another 2-3 hours a week. Studied for the exams for max 4 hours each and did very well on the midterm (A+) and hoping to end up with an A or A- in class over all. In-class essay - GREAT. Based on sources and open-note. Midterm - VERY fair and tbh I thought easy. Lowest grade I know of someone getting was an 85. Essay and passage IDs. Final - HARD but not impossible. Cumulative which sucked because there's so much content, but lots of types of questions to ensure diversity of learning strategies would work. Overall, tough grading but very fair. Discussion section participation worth 25% of the overall grade which is lit.

Best class I've taken so far at CU! Alfonso is incredibly kind, and memorizes everyone's name even if you never speak. He's so passionate and knowledgable about the course and constantly tries to involve students' perspectives in class. Very funny guy. I will say, wow he goes on tangents in his lectures - but the slides are always posted so it's never too much of a nuisance when we don't finish the material for the day. TAs are great - especially Heidi!

2 essays (1 based on series of additional readings and 1 based on film), 1 midterm, and 1 final which both consist of one longer essay and 4-6 ID passages based on primary sources read throughout the semester.

Salgado is the kindest man and a really engaging lecturer, also incorporates a fair amount of student participation so the course is super engaging!! This was my first history class and solidified my decision to become a history major, also helps that the TA Jay was actually the best. Grading very fair, A is super super achievable if you put in the effort. Definitely worth taking!!

I spent like 4 hours a week just doing readings (2 primary sources and usually 3 academic papers a week) + the time studying for midterm and doing the papers.

I definitely agree with the other reviews, a lot of dense reading but enjoyable and definitely worthwhile. Also, Prof is like the nicest ever, cares about his students and super knowledgeable. Midterm, final, two 5 page papers. Definitely a lot and you are expected to have some kind of background. Grading is nice and you'll do well if you do all the work and study.

2 papers, Midterm, Final exam; 2 primary source readings and 2-3 secondary source readings per week. Readings can be dense/long but overall a manageable workload.

Professor Salgado is a great professor! He is very understanding of student struggles and has no intention of making stressful situations worse. Most, if not all, of the readings were really interesting and changed the way I thought about the course subject. The lectures and overall course were very well organized.

Heavy on reading, but the readings are actually interesting. 2 essays and in person midterm and final. A bit of a heavy workload, but manageable.

Amazing professor! Very kind and extremely interesting and educated about class topics. This class transformed the way I think. I left feeling like I deeply understood the history and all of the intersecting factors that impacted it. Couldn't recommend it more.
