One roll of film processed every other week. Very light work.
I was interested in black and white film photography and he did not disappoint. Fairly expensive class. Probably $150 alltogether.
Lab days being included once a week in class is perfect. We were not assigned extra busy work like readings or homework, which allowed for better and more deliberate printed work from students. One can get out of this course exactly what they wish. If one wants to improve, push themselves, and seek after mastery -- the course will be more time consuming (considering spending time in the darkroom outside of class hours). Do note that one class a week is dedicated lab day. If one feels like they need to merely survive this course, they can certainly survive within lab hours -- but then why take this course during a super busy semester when you don't have time to apply yourself?
I recommend this class to everyone, with the caveat that the material costs for the course are extreme and potentially unaffordable for many. Note photo paper is over 50$ a pack, and you will need to buy multiple packs. Film is 10$ and you are expected to shoot about 20 rolls in a semester. Add in costs for a blotter book, binder, negative sleeves. How to use a camera. Darkroom use and additional techniques. Being comfortable in front of class being critiqued, and critiquing other works. About reference artists and photographers as guided by classroom discussions and peer presentations. Matthew Buckingham is an absolute delight, and anyone would be lucky to have him as a professor during their time at Columbia. Years into Columbia, it feels rare to encounter professors who haven't become lethargic or jaded about teaching introductory classes. Professor Buckingham is extremely approachable and very clearly passionate about visual arts and photography. He is always eager and open to coach you through wanting to learn and practice additional techniques or your sentiments about the medium itself. I am so grateful to have learned from him.
Expectation was having photos printed out for a crit every other week, but was incredibly forgiving.
He was such an amazing, sweet, quiet teacher. Guaranteed A if thats what youre going for, but he is dedicated to giving people an enjoyable class.
