My exposure to Chinese Documentary before this class was zero. This class opened my mind to a world of the documentary form that was eye opening and thought provoking. The perspective of Chinese filmmakers, the issues being explored in their films, and the way audiences interact with them were all new aspects of documentary film I learned about.
History of Chinese documentary cinema: from early 20th century to contemporary. Abundance of theoretical backups, ranging from philosophy to sociology to anthropology.
I learned the importance of documentary in the context of Chinese social changes. How the mode of documentary changes over time along with the social changes is extremely helpful to dig into the power of media. Never knew that documentary could be such political tool for both the government and individual.
Recommend for anyone interested in documentary (better than intro to doc classes at film dept)
