My Chinese speaking, reading, writing and listening improved tremendously. I am also able to use more complex grammar structures in my writing as a result of this course.
I really learned a lot - introduction to many concepts of Chinese history, philosophy, the development of language, etc. This course introduced a new set of vocabulary to me that enriched my ability to communicate abstract ideas and convey my thoughts more eloquently.
Our primary learning consisted of three avenues: 1. New phrases/words to use in everyday and formal conversation 2. How to use certain sentence structures to make coherent arguments 3. How to combine these sentences to form a cohesive argument in the form of an essay

This course was such fun. I really liked the use of the textbook to facilitate understanding of content. I felt I gained important knowledge of vocabulary and grammar too.

I learned foundational Chinese grammar, in both the spoken and written context. I also learned vocabulary that would be helpful navigating more complex situations. The class also taught me important things about Chinese culture. In particular, the course gave a good overview of the specific usages of Chinese people in everyday conversation.
It's just a very solid course. Excellent, excellent TA's too. Truly cannot sing the praises of Cheng laoshi enough.
Chinese language skills, especially around themes of contemporary society
I learned a breadth of new vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills as well as concepts of Chinese culture. This course truly broadened my understanding of society in China ranging from education to economic contexts to rural life and more. This course utilizes in-depth cultural study to encourage language learning, making it even more fascinating and engaging!
